Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs found in the ovaries. They are common and normally occur during ovulation which occurs when the ovaries release an egg each month. Many women with ovarian cysts do not have any symptoms. Usually the cysts are harmless.

 

The ovaries in the female body have 2 functions. They produce ocytes (eggs) for fertilization and they also produce the reproductive hormones, estrogen and progesterone. Normally only one single oocyte from one ovary is released during each menstrual cycle. Each ovary takes alternate turns releasing an egg. Ovulation occurs mid-cycle which is 28 days.
